Isabel's Update #7-Painting!

1 min read

Hello everyone! So this is a short update of my china painting process. Each doll takes about 7-9 layers of paint and each layer is fired on in the kiln. I can manage 2 paintings a day if the kiln cools down fast enough. So it takes me about a week to a week and half. The wonderful thing about china paint is, it is permanent! Yep! No fading and no scratch off. Each Isabel has turned out a little differently, so you guys are receiving your own one of a kind Isabel :)

I had no idea china painting involved so many layers and firing! This is fascinating.

Approximately how long does each firing take? Does it vary much depending on the layer?

Once all the painting is done and fired, do you follow up with anything…like a sealer. I think not but was curious.

Thank you!

Yes, it pretty intense! It takes about 1.5hrs for each firing and then it needs to cool down. Pretty much all the layers are fired at the same temperature, in my work anyway. I know there are different types of overglaze, which is essentially china paint, that do take different temps. No sealer needed. It stays vibrant forever...at least a 100 years or so :)
